And before I could stop myself, my brain did the math.
Wait, I'm older than her. Have I paid off mine? No. How did she do that? I need to know.
I watched the whole thing.
Here's what's happening: the human brain wants to benchmark itself.
How am I doing compared to you? My age, my weight, my house, my career, my timeline.
We are constantly trying to figure out where we stand.
And a hook with a number in it gives us a place to stand.
It's an anchor. It's context. It hands our analytical brain exactly the data point it was already hunting for.
If you have a number, put it in your hook.
"I'm knocking down my 120-year-old home."
"I'm 36 and here's what I wish I knew in my 20s."
"I've been trying to land this meeting for 2 years."
Notice what those numbers do.
They don't just describe. They make you lean in.
120 years old. That house has stories. Why are you tearing it down?
36 looking back at 26. I want the shortcut you didn't have.
2 years for one meeting. That's persistence I want to understand.
The number isn't decoration. It's the hook itself.
Your age.
How long you've been at something.
How many times you tried.
How much something cost.
How many followers you started with.
The year you began.
You're sitting on numbers that would stop the scroll, and you're opening with "Hey guys" instead.
Instead, pull one piece of data from your own life or your own work, and let it carry the hook.
You just need the one true number that makes someone go, "wait, how?"
