When you hear the word ‘discipline,’ what is your reaction?

Does that word make you feel good?

Or does it bring up fear and negativity?

According to Google AI “Discipline means the practice of training people to obey rules or standards of behavior, the ability to control one's own impulses and actions, a specific field of study or work, or a method of punishment for wrongdoing.”

I have for years felt a real aversion to the word ‘discipline.’

When I hear people talk about discipline, it feels synonymous with ‘punishment.’

However, there is one thing that changes my view.

And that’s when I consider discipline in the context of my children.

I see discipline as necessary, good, and something I don’t want them to be afraid of.
I know that If they grow up with the discipline to get their homework done before play time, use their manners at events, or to eat vegetables - I am doing something right.

So how can I develop that feeling towards my own behavior, and not just my childrens?

This week I had the opportunity to listen to content creators Jeanelle Teves and Sam Cutler speak about what has made them build successful personal brands.

And both of them described discipline.

Sam Cutler has posted at 9:30am every day, for years. She credits her organic success - building an 8-figure business off of organic social media alone - to a strict narrow focus on the topics and content her audience responds to.

Jeanelle made a new years resolution to make content Intentionally, and committed to three weekly high-quality series.

Discipline doesn’t have to be perfection.

I am sure that Jeanelle and Sam have missed a post here or there.

But over the long term, their discipline to keep going with their original vision Is what they credit their success to.

They didn’t ever, once, describe ‘experimenting until something hit.’

Or ‘posting what I feel like on that day.’

That tactic doesn’t work. The algorithym can’t categorize random, expansive life.

I talk to a lot of creators that spend time overthinking each post.

But what If re-designing the plan, rewriting the strategy, questioning It.

Is exactly what is holding you back?

I Invite you to reconsider your content creator journey with the word discipline in mind.

But instead of being afraid of it, run joyfully toward it.

See it as a new challenge to embrace discipline.

Discipline toward the vision you have to succeed on social. Discipline to stick to the plan even when your outside world is shifting.

Let’s see how far it can carry you.

XO, Lindsay

Social Trend of the Week

Things You Should Definitely Ghost

This Halloween trend is kind of fun. Creators are dressing up as ghosts and "ghosting" stuff their audience should probably avoid.

You just throw on a ghost costume (a bedsheet totally counts) and hold up signs with common mistakes, bad habits, myths, or red flags from your niche. Each clip gets a different one, and it helps to keep the text short so people can read it fast.

Works for pretty much anything. Skincare mistakes, sketchy contract stuff, gym myths, whatever your people keep getting wrong. Easy to film, and you get to say "ghost it" a lot.

Examples: Skin, Dentist, Ghosting, Carousel.

Honeybee

Olivia Rodrigo's "Honey Bee" is showing up in a couple of different ways in carousels right now.

Some creators are using this part of the song,“In the dark, I’m not scared. I just reach and you are right there“, to show the close bond between them and their siblings, or between their kids.

Others are using a different part of the song, “Baby boy, Honeybee. God I love the way you look at me“, to show how their pets look at them.

Same song, two very different vibes. Whichever one fits your content, it's a sweet way to show who you love.

Examples: Sisters, Friends, Siblings, Siblings 2, Cat, Doggo.
