Musings + Social Media Trends: September 2026
Hi friend!
This episode of Odd Lots about how AI is ‘upending the lives’ of people who do social media professionally caught my ears this week.
I wouldn’t say my life has been ‘upended.’
Business is good. AI hasn’t taken my job.
Social media consultant Rachel Karten and Taylor Lorenz, two people who have watched the internet evolve for years, clarified the real changes.
And they believe the creators most in danger of being replaced by AI right now are the "how to" creators.
Nobody really cares to learn how to plunge a toilet from a real human.
Fair.
That video can be AI generated. It probably already is. The information is the product, and AI is very, very good at information.
But here's what AI cannot generate:
You.
Your lifestyle. Your curation. Your art. Your point of view.
People don't follow a human to learn how to plunge a toilet. They follow a human to see how she lives. What she picks. What she notices. What she makes of this life.
The truth is, trust from an audience is still the most valuable thing a creator can generate.
Hearing industry veterans confirm this was validating. But it also lit a fire under me.
Because if AI is coming for the informational content… then the window is wide open for the personal kind.
Your stories. Your scars, not your open wounds. Your weird little obsessions and your Charlotte Russe pants and your kid's backyard goal celebration.
I think the opportunity now is to lean even farther into ‘your weird.’
Let that freak flag fly.
XO, Lindsay
Social Trend of the Week
Ain’t in LA
Not everyone's chasing the LA dream, and that's exactly the point of Adéla's trendy song "Ain't in LA," which is the first song by a Slovak artist to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. It's basically a love letter to her hometown of Bratislava, and a big "you don't have to move to the big city make it" energy.
If you or your business is based outside of major metropolitan areas, this is your anthem. Show off your hometown and small-town roots and prove that you don't need LA to build something real and make your dreams come true.
Examples: Beverley, Pho, Austin, Tommy's, Swim Lessons.
